How to evaluate a floating solar plant for long-term performance over 30 years

Laketricity’s mission is to develop sustainable floating solar power plants that are capable of producing useful and responsible renewable energy throughout their operating life. All projects are designed to blend harmoniously into their environment, while limiting their impact on ecosystems and existing uses.

In a context where energy facilities are expected to operate for several decades, the issue of sustainability is essential. Today, a floating solar power plant can be operated for more than 30 years, provided it is designed and supported by a long-term vision.

In-depth site analysis for successful integration

Studies to ensure a thorough understanding of the floating solar project environment

Firstly, analysis of the site and environmental conditions is the key initial step. Successful environmental integration is a fundamental criterion at Laketricity. Our project managers conduct impact studies prior to the project in order to understand the ecological balance and the functioning of local biodiversity. All of these analyses enable the technical design of the power plant to be adapted to the specific characteristics of the site in question.

In addition, this approach is accompanied by close consultation with local stakeholders: local authorities, town halls, water managers and stakeholders such as fishing or environmental protection associations. This dialogue enables the project to be adapted to the specific characteristics of the area and promotes the harmonious integration of the power plant.

The importance of materials and the technical system chosen

Choosing the anchoring system

The dimensions of the anchoring and mooring systems are also crucial to the durability of the installation. Laketricity selects the technological solutions best suited to the constraints of the site. Several configurations can be implemented, such as anchoring to the bottom of the pond when the water level is likely to change over time, or anchoring to the bank when the nature of the bottom does not allow for ground fixing, for example.

All of these parameters are carefully studied by our teams of engineers to ensure the long-term stability, safety and performance of the power plant.

The choice of materials and equipment also plays an essential role in the durability of floating solar power plants. Components are selected for their ability to withstand the stresses specific to aquatic environments, such as constant humidity, exposure to UV radiation, temperature variations and various mechanical stresses.

Photovoltaic modules are selected for their robustness and long-term reliability. More generally, we favour materials and technical solutions that are suitable for use over several decades, in line with the expected lifespan of the installations.

In addition, Laketricity draws on the technical expertise of the Ciel & Terre International group, of which it is the independent project development entity. With nearly 15 years of experience in floating solar power, the group provides valuable feedback to ensure the reliability of the power plants.

Monitoring throughout the power plant’s lifetime

The performance of a floating photovoltaic power plant also depends on well-planned operation and maintenance. At Laketricity, we design our installations to be accessible and easy to maintain, even in aquatic environments. This design simplifies inspection and maintenance operations and helps to ensure optimal production throughout the power plant’s lifetime.

Our expertise does not stop at the construction of the plant: we support our partners throughout its operation. Thanks to our experience of developing and commissioning nearly a hundred plants around the world, we have developed prevention tools and processes that enable us to manage the plant’s operation. Our operation and maintenance processes enable us to maintain a high level of performance and guarantee the continuity of the plant’s operation.

This long-term vision is also part of our comprehensive support. This comprehensive approach allows us to develop high-performance, sustainable projects tailored to your needs, while respecting the environment and international standards.

Anticipating the end of life of a floating solar power plant: responsible dismantling and restoration

Even though the end of life of a floating solar power plant only occurs after several decades of operation, it is taken into account from the early stages of the project. Laketricity supports its partners right up to this stage, offering a strategy for dismantling and restoring the site.

At the end of its operational life, the floating power plant is dismantled using a process designed to minimise the impact on the site. The equipment is removed, recoverable materials are recycled and the water body is restored to as close to its original condition as possible.

The main stages of dismantling:
  • Disconnection of the photovoltaic installation from the electricity grid
  • Gradual dismantling of the power station, unit by unit
  • Collection, sorting and recycling of materials and components in accordance with manufacturers’ recycling channels
  • Recycling of aluminium parts by approved recyclers
  • Removal of anchoring systems and foundations
  • Site restoration and return of the water body
1. Déconnexion du réseau électrique@2x
2. Démontage unité par unité
3. Collecte et recyclage des éléments
4. Retrait des équipements electriques@2x
5. Retrait des fondations et de l’ancrage

Ultimately, developing a floating solar power plant over more than 30 years requires a comprehensive approach that integrates technical, economic and environmental considerations from the design phase onwards. This assessment is not limited to an analysis over a given period of time: it is based on a long-term vision.

At Laketricity, this approach translates into support at every stage of the project. From environmental analysis to the end of the plant’s life, we implement tailored solutions to ensure the sustainability, performance and successful integration of our projects.

By combining technical expertise, knowledge of floating solar power and environmental commitment, Laketricity evaluates and develops floating solar power plants that are capable of lasting over time, serving local areas and contributing to the energy transition.
